Frequently Asked Questions

What is Coaching?

Coaching is unique in that, unlike therapy, mentoring, or consulting, it is completely focused on helping the coachee discover their own power, figure out their own path, and feel confident in it. Coaching addresses what is happening in the coachee’s life right now, and helps them pick their direction, address possible obstacles, and get moving toward whatever goal they themselves may set. The coach does not do this for you, the coach merely knows the right questions to ask and the best ways to support you in doing the work for yourself. Coaching is empowering, invigorating, and exciting. Imagine you are riding a tandem bike, the coachee is in the front seat, picking the path, in full control, and the coach is in the back adding strength and power to the drive. Coaching allows you to decide what you would like to work toward, and then helps you make a plan to do so.

What is the difference between Coaching and Therapy?

Therapy is focused on bringing people from suffering to baseline. Therapy deals more with behavioral or emotional problems, disruptive situations and works to bring clients towards normal function by healing disfunction.

Coaching is focused on bringing people from baseline to flourishing. Coaching helps functional people achieve higher goals and achieve excellence while creating their ideal life. The main focus remains on flourishing and creating the future. Coaching is client led, and the topics and issues the client brings to the conversation sets the context as coaching or therapy.*

What is Parent Empowerment Coaching?

Parent Empowerment Coaching is a specific type of coaching focused on the goals, dreams, and deep self-knowledge of parents who have had a hard time focusing on themselves. Often, parents are so focused on their children that they lose sight of the fact that they have needs and wants too, and that their lives are just as important as their children’s.

Some topics discussed can include (but are never limited to):

·       Preventing and/or healing Parental Burnout.

·       Freeing yourself from Parental Guilt.

·       Setting healthy boundaries in all areas of life.

·       Refocusing on personal, physical, emotional, spiritual, and/or professional goals.

·       Creating meaningful and achievable parenting goals.

·       Having your feelings heard, validated, and held in a safe space.

What does a session look like?

Sessions are guided by the client, which means that whatever you bring to a session is where we will go. However, there are some constants that will be present. In the first one or two sessions we will focus on getting clear about what your goals are, so that we know what we’re working toward. At the end of each session you’ll set some small steps or “homework” that you’ll work on in the time between sessions. At the beginning of the next session we’ll check in on where you are with those steps to provide gentle and loving accountability for you. I will not give advice or tell you what to do. While each session is different and completely tailored to the client, I will always provide a safe space free from judgment, active listening, open questions, opportunities for perspective shifts, and some insight should it be appropriate.

Will coaching solve all my problems? Do you guarantee results?

Coaching does not solve problems for you. Coaching helps clients set and focus on their own goals, have a safe space to work on themselves, provides perspective shifts and “aha” moments, and helps clients to be purposeful about creating forward momentum in their life. A coach should have training and expertise that helps you gain insight and tools that make you much more likely to attain your goals. Any coach who guarantees you some specific result is often just trying to sell you something. The progress you make in coaching is dependent on your own choices and work, I never take credit for that. However, I do always say that giving yourself the time and space to focus on yourself and having a trained coach to be your partner along the way is the perfect recipe for true change.
